والحُبُّand love لَوْلاwere it not for جَوْرُهُits injustice فيin حكْمِهِits judgment
والحُبُّ لَوْلا جَوْرُهُ في حكْمِهِ
ماnot سَلّمsubmitted الأَقْوىthe stronger لأَمْرِto the command of الأَضْعَفِthe weaker
ما سَلّم الأَقْوى لأَمْرِ الأَضْعَفِ
And love—were it not for its injustice in judgment,
Were it not for love's tyranny in its rule,
The stronger would not submit to the weaker’s command.
The stronger would not submit to the weaker's command.

It has left me neither body nor tears; so speak
It left me neither body nor tear, so say
Of one wasted by love, weeping with wasted tears.
In an elegy that weeps with the tear of an elegy.
