When the month of fasting grows long, I shorten its length
When the fasting month grows long, her red wine shortens its length
If the month of the Fast drags on, I curtail its length
With red wine whose redness [outshines] the pomegranate blossom.
Blushing red, poured by a rose-cheeked girl, its redness
With a crimson vintage whose flush mimics the pomegranate bloom.
يقصّرُshortens عُمرَthe life of الليلِthe night إنif طالis prolonged شربُهاdrinking it
يقصّرُ عُمرَ الليلِ إن طال شربُها

ويعملُ في عُمرِ النهارِ خُمارُها
Drinking it, if prolonged, shortens the life of the night,
Shortens the night, however long her drinking
Its consumption shortens the life of the night when it lingers,
And its hangover works upon the life of the day.
And makes the day spin in a drunken haze
And its hangover consumes the life of the day.
