When the fox went forth in the morning from his den,

Seeking a livelihood for his cubs,

Joyful, having stirred from his haunt,

I intercepted him on his foraging path

With a ravenous hound, prancing in his trappings,

In yellow rings and in his straps,

His lowest rib aflame from his leanness.

Slimming had pared away his sides,

After he had been, throughout his frame,

Tender, clothed in flesh by the rich milkers among his pregnant camels,

In days when he was not restrained for his stumbling,

While still a fawn, not yet come near his blades,

In a dwelling that screened him from his visitors,

Where he was trained at both ends of his day.

Until he proved worthy when tested,

And became like a bracelet of pure gold,

As though drawn together by his hobble,

Drawing his two ends together in his compactness.

And when he stretched, his measure in spans came to

Ten, when his full length was measured.

As though his two jaws, when he bared his teeth,

Were a studding of nails along his rim.

As though behind where his eyelids met,

    Ghada-wood embers blazed without cease.

A wolf–hyena cross: when he scented the air, you could not reason with him,

Except by letting him off his halter.

Then he darted off like a star descending,

With the sweep of one signaling late at night with his fire.

Until, when he sped into his gallop,

    His claw-points pierced his ears.

Until, when he plunged into his dust,

A rough brute grappled with him in his dust.

Then he wrenched a joint from his backbone,

And tore both sides of his breast-covering off him.

No good comes to the fox from his early start.

No good comes to the fox from their early start.
