    When night lifted and the horizon turned white,

    And night's veil drew back from the face of the roads,

    A man of gentle countenance and character came to me early,

    Ready when you call upon him, gallant and deft,

    Calling to the hunt—why not say, 'Set out!'?

    With droop-eared hounds, sound of eye,

    كَأَنَّما أُذناهُ مِن بَعضِ المِزَق

    Some yellow in color, others purest white.

    As though its two ears were scraps of cloth;

    If it pressed its cheek against an ear, it would stick.
