Time has consumed me with its gnawing,

and love has deepened my decline.

And love for my beloved has become

a companion to my heart, clinging like a saddlecloth.

    قَد صارَ لِلنَفسِ نَفسا

    My beloved has mingled with my soul;

indeed, he has become the soul of my soul.

He led me astray after I had been

    a priest in my devotion.

I do not rouse myself for prayer,

nor part my lips for recitation.

So my reason flew away, and I do not

sense even a fleeting trace of reason.

And all this is the fault of my eye—

may you be blotted out, O eye, utterly!

Why did you not lower your gaze, instead of meeting

    a sun clothed in tunics?

Then I said: O light of my eye,

you have stolen my reason by stealth.

So restore my life to me

by biting with your mouth and licking.

But he could not hold himself back from

    slandering me and behaving basely.

So my face blackened because of him,

    until it turned to ink.

And in this he does nothing beyond

    insulting me, morning and evening.

Then I said: Woe to me from one

    who never forgets such things!

Time is good at nothing but

insulting me and cheating me of my due.

For I have never seen anyone like my beloved—

so harsh of heart, so cruel.
