قلت السلامُ على المحيل محالُ

They said, “Peace be upon you, O ruins!”

I said, “Peace upon the desolate place is impossible.”

فدعوا لتبكيةِ الديار وأهلها

فدعوا لتبكيةِ الديار وأهلها

ولنا بأهلِ مودّةٍ أشغالُ

ولنا بأهلِ مودّةٍ أشغالُ

So they called for lamenting the dwellings and their inhabitants,

So leave aside weeping for the dwellings and their people,

while we are busy with those we love.

For we are occupied with those of true affection.
