تَتيهُtakes pride الشَمسُthe sun وَالقَمَرُand the moon المُنيرُradiant
إِذاwhen قُلناwe say كَأَنَّكُماas though you two were الأَميرُthe emir
The sun and the radiant moon grow proud
The sun and the resplendent moon go astray
The sun and the illuminating moon swell with pride
When we say, "You two are like the emir."
When we say you are like the prince
When we say to them, "You resemble the Prince."
فَإِنfor if يَكُit be أَشبَهاthey both resembled مِنهُof him قَليلاًa little
فَقَدthen indeed أَخطاهُماhas eluded them both شَبَهٌlikeness كَثيرُmuch
For if they resemble him a little,
If there is little resemblance to him
For even if they bear his likeness but a little,
Much likeness has eluded them both.
There is much mistaken resemblance
A far greater resemblance has surely eluded them.
لِأَنَّbecause الشَمسَthe sun تَغرُبُsets حينَwhen تُمسيreaches evening
وَأَنَّand because البَدرَthe full moon يُنقِصُهُdiminishes it المَسيرُthe course
For the sun sets when evening comes,
Because the sun sets when it becomes evening
For the sun must set when evening descends,
And the full moon is diminished by its course.
And the full moon wanes with its journey
And the full moon wanes as it traverses its course,
وَنورُand the light مُحَمَّدٍof Muhammad أَبَداًforever تَمامٌfull
عَلىon وَضَحِthe clear stretch الطَريقَةِof the path لاnot يَحورُturns back
And Muhammad's light is forever full,
But Muhammad's light is always perfect
Yet the light of Muhammad is forever complete,
On the clear path, never turning back.
Illuminating the path clearly without deviating
Upon the clear path, it never diminishes.
