حامِلُbearer of الهَوىlove تَعِبُweary
يَستَخِفُّهُcarries him away الطَرَبُrapture
The bearer of love is weary.
The carrier of passion grows weary,
The bearer of passion is weary,
Rapture carries him away.
Worn down by distress,
Made unsteady by the rapture of love.
إِنif بَكىhe weeps يُحَقُّis justified لَهُfor him
لَيسَis not ماwhat بِهِafflicts him لَعِبُplay
If he weeps, he is justified;
If he weeps he is right to do so,
If he weeps, he is justified,
What ails him is no game.
What ails him is no jest,
For his plight is no mere game.
تَضحَكينَyou laugh لاهِيَةًcarefree
وَالمُحِبُّand the lover يَنتَحِبُsobs
You laugh, carefree,
You laugh heedlessly,
You laugh, distracted and amused,
While the lover sobs.
While the lover laments grievously,
While the lover weeps in despair.
تَعجَبينَyou marvel مِنat سَقَميmy sickness
صِحَّتيmy health هِيَit العَجَبُthe marvel
You marvel at my sickness;
You marvel at my sickness,
You are amazed by my sickness,
My health is the marvel.
Yet it is your health that amazes me,
But my health is the real wonder.
كُلَّماwhenever اِنقَضىcame to an end سَبَبٌa cause

Whenever one cause comes to an end,
Whenever one reason from you expires,
Whenever one cause comes to an end,
Another cause from you returns to me.
Another reason from you transpires,
A new cause from you returns to me.
