أُعَزّيI console ياO مُحَمَّدُMuhammad عَنكَfor your loss نَفسيmyself
مَعاذَrefuge اللَهِGod وَالمِنَنِand the favors الجِسامِmighty
Shall I console myself for your loss, O Muhammad?
I console my own soul for your loss, O Muhammad,
God forbid, by the mighty favors!
I seek refuge in God and His immense bounties.
فَهَلّاso why not ماتَdied قَومٌsome people لَمdid not يَموتواthey die
وَدوفِعَand was held off عَنكَfrom you ليfor my sake أَجَلُthe appointed hour الحِمامِof death
Why, then, did some who still lived not die,
Why did not those people die who have yet to die,
And death’s appointed hour not be held off from you for my sake?
So that the appointed time of death might be diverted from you?
كَأَنَّas though الدَهرَTime صادَفَfound مِنكَfrom you ثَأراًa blood-debt
أَوِor اِستَشفىsought healing بِهُلكِكَthrough your death مِنfrom سَقامsickness
As though Time had found in you a blood-debt to settle,
It is as though Time found in you a vendetta to settle,
Or sought healing from sickness through your death.
Or sought a cure for its own sickness through your destruction.
