Sa‘id’s loaf is worth as much to him as his own life.

At times he turns it over; at others he plays with it.

And he takes it out of his sleeve, then sniffs it.

And he seats it in his lap and addresses it.

And if a poor man comes to him asking for what he can spare,

then his mother and kin have surely been bereaved of him.

The whip strikes him repeatedly from every side,

and both his legs are broken, and his moustache is plucked out.
