Rouse your drinking companion; he has grown drowsy.
Wake your boon companion, for he has nodded off,
He will pour you a cup in the predawn gloom,
To serve you a cup in the lingering darkness of dawn,

Pure wine, as though its radiant beams
Were a flame in its drinker’s palm,
Were a burning torch in the hand of its drinker,

Of wine whose vines were chosen
From a vintage whose vine was chosen
And planted by Kisra at Anah.
By Chosroes in 'Anah, where he planted it.

It leaves a young man as though
It leaves the young man in such a state
His tongue were struck dumb by it.
That his tongue seems struck with muteness;

He is called, and raises his head;
He is called, so he attempts to lift his head,
But once he has lifted it, he lets it droop.
But the moment he raises it, it droops back down.

One in a short tunic pours it for you;
He who serves it to you is clad in a tunic,
He entertains and hurries whoever lingers.
Beguiling the soul and hurrying those who delay,

ظَبيُ الرِياضِ إِذا نَعِس
Languid of eyelid, as though he were
With languid eyelids, as if he were
A meadow gazelle grown drowsy.
A gazelle of the meadows when it grows drowsy.

A light for the faith, from which light is kindled.
A light for the faith from which illumination is drawn;

Five inherited the caliphate;
He inherited the Caliphate from five before him,
He joined them as their sixth and best.
And as the noblest sixth, he completed their count.

The full moons weep at his laughter,
The full moons weep at the beauty of his laughter,
And the sword laughs if he frowns.
While the sword laughs whenever he frowns.
