Put aside, my friend, all thought

of one who has changed or deserted you.

And drink a reddish-brown, tart wine,

grown an old maid, laid low by age,

from the hand of a tender gazelle,

coy, with eyes of striking black and white.

He captures hearts with his coy charm

and with his glance whenever he looks.

So, within his hand, the wine is like

a sun, and his palm is like a moon.

No drinking companion ever drank of it in the morning—

    three cups—without becoming drunk

with delight and singing out aloud,

    his gaze now grown strange:

“O you whom sleeplessness has harmed,

    I have news of love.”
