ياOh لَيتَif only زَجرَbird-augury العائِفِيَّةِthe bird-diviners حاضِريpresent with me
يا لَيتَ زَجرَ العائِفِيَّةِ حاضِري
إِذwhen حِرتُI was bewildered بَينَbetween كِتابِهاher letter وَالطالِعِand the omen
إِذ حِرتُ بَينَ كِتابِها وَالطالِعِ
Oh, if only the bird-diviners’ augury were at hand for me,
Oh, if only the one blaming was present to forbid me
Oh, would that the augur's warning were present with me,
when I was bewildered between her letter and the omen.
When I was confused between her letter and her look
As I stood bewildered between her letter and the rising star,
خَتَمَتshe sealed عَلىupon الشَكوىthe complaint إِلَيَّto me بِخاتِمٍwith a signet ring
خَتَمَت عَلى الشَكوى إِلَيَّ بِخاتِمٍ
نَقَشَتshe engraved عَلَيهِon it رُبَّmany a هَجرٍseparation نافِعيbeneficial to me
نَقَشَت عَلَيهِ رُبَّ هَجرٍ نافِعي
She sealed her complaint to me with a signet ring,
She sealed my complaint to her with a ring
She stamped a seal upon my complaint with a signet ring,
on which she engraved: “Many a separation benefits me.”
On which she engraved: My departure does you good
Upon which she engraved: "Many a separation proves beneficial."
