أَسرَفتَ في هَجري وَفي إِبعادي

O you who leave me a body without a heart,

O you who left a body without a heart

O you who leave me as a body without a heart,

You have gone too far in forsaking me and driving me away.

You were excessive in avoiding and distancing me

You have gone to extremes in forsaking and casting me away.

إِن كانَ يَمنَعُكَ الزِيارَةَ أَعيُنٌ

إِن كانَ يَمنَعُكَ الزِيارَةَ أَعيُنٌ

فَاِدخُل عَلَيَّ بِعِلَّةِ العُوّادِ

فَاِدخُل عَلَيَّ بِعِلَّةِ العُوّادِ

If eyes keep you from visiting,

If eyes prevent you from visiting

If prying eyes prevent you from visiting,

Then come to me under the pretext of visiting the sick.

Then come to me under the guise of visiting the sick

Then come to me under the pretext of visiting the sick.

إِنَّ القُلوبَ مَعَ العُيونِ إِذا جَنَت

إِنَّ القُلوبَ مَعَ العُيونِ إِذا جَنَت

جاءَت بَلِيَّتُها عَلى الأَجسادِ

جاءَت بَلِيَّتُها عَلى الأَجسادِ

Indeed, when hearts and eyes transgress,

For when hearts move away from eyes

For when hearts and eyes conspire to commit a crime,

Their affliction falls upon the bodies.

Their afflictions come upon the bodies

The resulting calamity descends upon the bodies.

أَشكو إِلَيكَ جَفاءَ أَهلِكَ إِنَّهُم

أَشكو إِلَيكَ جَفاءَ أَهلِكَ إِنَّهُم

ضَرَبوا عَلَيَّ الأَرضَ بِالأَسدادِ

ضَرَبوا عَلَيَّ الأَرضَ بِالأَسدادِ

I complain to you of your family's harshness; indeed, they

I complain to you of the harshness of your family, for they

I complain to you of your family's harshness, for they

have closed off the earth to me with barriers.

Have barred the earth against me

Have barricaded the earth against me with impassable walls.
