أَياO مَنyou who دَعانيinvited me لِلوِصالِto union كِتابَةًin writing
أَيا مَن دَعاني لِلوِصالِ كِتابَةً
مِراراًrepeatedly وَمِنand from بَعدِafter الكِتابِthe letter رَسولُa messenger
مِراراً وَمِن بَعدِ الكِتابِ رَسولُ
O you who invited me to union in writing,
Oh you who called me to meet
O you who summoned me to union through the written word,
Repeatedly—and after the letter, a messenger came—
Repeatedly, and after writing sent a messenger
Time and again, with messengers arriving after scrolls,
وَماand not سَرَّنيpleased me أَنّيthat I أَكونُshould be بِحالَةٍin a state
وَما سَرَّني أَنّي أَكونُ بِحالَةٍ
لِمِثلِكَfor one like you فيin الدُنياthis world عَلَيَّover me سَبيلُa way; a hold
لِمِثلِكَ في الدُنيا عَلَيَّ سَبيلُ
And it did not please me to be in a state
Yet I was not pleased to be in a state
It brings me no joy to find myself in such a plight,
Where one like you has a hold over me in this world.
For the likes of you I am accessible
Where the likes of you can find a path to me in this world.
