    O who will aid a tear-streaming eye,

That behaves like a woman in rapture?

And who will aid a soul in love,

    That turns like a cart?

Love made me thin, so I be-

    -came like a reed.

There is no good in a lovesick man if

    He is thick-necked.

I loved a coquettish white gazelle,

    With a gilded cheek.

So I cannot forget his words

At my hand's pinch: 'O father!'

O Daha, my soul be your ransom,

And O gazelle of the scribes!

    You have left me famous,

    More famous than Mukhshalaba.

So no kiss is my lot

From you, whether bought or given.

And to a reproacher I said:

'Do not make such a clamor.

Indeed, the one I have loved

Has the upper hand through my love.'
