ياO رَبِّmy Lord إِنَّindeed القَومَthe people قَدhave ظَلَمونيthey wronged me
وَبِلاand without اِقتِرافِcommitting an offense مُعَطِّلٍa denier of God حَبَسونيthey imprisoned me
O my Lord, the people have indeed wronged me,
O Lord! The people have wronged me,
O Lord, indeed the people have wronged me,
And jailed me though I committed no offense of denying God.
And imprisoned me without any fault.
And without the commission of a heresy, they imprisoned me.
وَإِلىand to الجُحودِdenial بِماof what عَلَيهِupon it طَوِيَّتيmy innermost convictions
رَبّيmy Lord إِلَيكَtoward You بِكِذبِهِمthrough their lies نَسَبونيthey accused me
And of denying what I hold in my heart
And because of my humility they have falsely attributed lies to me.
And to the denial of the faith my soul enfolds,
Toward You, my Lord, they accused me through their lies.
My Lord! Only to you I complain of their lies.
My Lord, concerning You, they have falsely accused me.
ماnot كانَit was إِلّاexcept الجَريُrunning فيin مَيدانِهِمtheir arena
فيin كُلِّevery خِزيٍdisgrace وَالمَجانَةُand licentiousness دينيmy creed
It was nothing but running in their arena,
I was but running in their field,
It was only a race within their own arena,
In every disgrace, and licentiousness was my creed.
Branded with infamy which is my faith.
In every disgrace, where shamelessness was my creed.
لاnot العُذرُthe excuse يُقبَلُis accepted ليfor me وَيَفرَقُand fears شاهِديmy witness

No excuse is accepted from me, and my witness fears
No excuse of mine will be accepted, nor will my witnesses make any difference,
No excuse of mine is accepted, and my witness fears,
Them; nor will they accept my sworn oath.
Nor will they be pleased with my oaths.
Them, nor are they satisfied with my sworn oath.

It was not, if they only knew, the first hiding place
Had they known my first abode
It would not be—if they but knew—the first hiding place,
In a house of dishonor and an abode of humiliation.
Was in a house of disgrace and humiliation -
In a house of vice and a dwelling of disgrace.
أَمّاas for الأَمينُal-Amin فَلَستُso I am not أَرجوI hope for دَفعَهُhis warding off
عَنّيfrom me فَمَنso who ليfor me اليَومَtoday بِالمَأمونِwith al-Ma'mun
As for al-Amin, I have no hope of his warding it off
As for the trusted one, I do not expect him
As for Al-Amin, I do not hope for his defense,
From me; who, then, can bring me al-Ma'mun today?
To defend me, so who do I have today that I can trust?
Of me; so who will bring me Al-Ma'mun today?
