O friend, what have I to do with desolate ruins,

or with describing riding camels and saddles?

Wine and revelry have distracted me from them,

and the strumming of the tanbur and the strings,

and my listening to singing from every young beauty,

    coquettish, with her bewitching gaze.

So leave me be, for that is more desirable and sweeter

than questioning the dust and stones.
