    O boon bestowed by drunkenness!

My gratitude to you never ends.

You were given kisses beyond your wishes

by one they said was hard to attain.

With those kisses, he bends his neck toward you—

a young gazelle whose eye's craft is magic.

The cup's heady warmth kept putting us at ease,

until the veil between us was torn away,

in a gathering where joy laughed,

baring its back teeth, and wine became lawful.

And indeed she carries us across the wilderness when

the day stands still and the tawny gazelles rest at noon:

a Shadani she-camel that grazed the protected pasture and emerged

as huge as the mountains, as though she were a palace.

    تَعمالُهُ الشَذَرانِ وَالخَطَرُ

    She folds a tufted tail over her two haunches;

its constant work is swaying and swishing.

    When she lifts it aloft,

you would say an eagle hovered above her.

And when she lowers it, laying it across,

you would say a curtain was let down over her.

Sometimes she stoops low, and you would take her for

a tracker guided by a trail.

When I draw her rein short, there rises

above her forequarters a noble cheek.

She is like one who leans close, so you can make him hear

a little conversation, his ear burdened with deafness.

She drives the gadflies away with a tufted tail,

thick with hair, adorned by braiding.

She follows a train of worn-out camels, injured by

the tugging of nose-rings, their cheeks hollow.

    عَتَبوا فَأَعتَبَهُم بِكَ الدَهرُ

    Sons of hope drive them toward you;

they complained, and fate, through you, appeased them.

    فَتَدَفَّقا فَكِلاكُما بَحرُ

    You are al-Khasib, and this is Egypt;

so pour forth, both of you, for each of you is a sea.

Do not hold me back from the full reach of my hope

in the least, for you two have no excuse for that.

It is my due, now that I am between you two,

that poverty should not settle in my courtyard.

    The Nile's water revives Egypt,

and your copious generosity revives its people.
