فِداؤُكَa ransom for you نَفسيmy soul قَدindeed طَرِبتُI have yearned إِلىfor الكَأسِthe cup
وَتُقتُand I have longed إِلىfor شَمِّsmelling البَنَفسَجِthe violets وَالآسِand the myrtle
My soul be your ransom! I have yearned for the cup,
May my soul be your ransom; I am seized with desire for the cup,
and longed to smell violets and myrtle.
And I yearn to inhale the scent of violets and myrtle.
فَهَلso, would...? لَكَfor you فيin أَنthat نَجعَلَwe make اليَومَtoday نُسكَناour rite
وَنَشرَبَهاand we drink it فيin البَيتِthe house سِرّاًsecretly مِنَfrom الناسِthe people
Would you, then, have us make today our rite,
So are you willing that we make this day our ritual,
and drink it at home, in secret from others?
And drink it within the house, hidden from the people?
فَإِنthen if فَطِنواthey notice قُلناwe shall say نَصارىChristians وَعيدُهُمand their feast
وَلَيسَand there is not لِشُربِin drinking الراحِthe wine فيat العيدِthe feast مِنany باسِharm
If they catch on, we shall say, 'Christians, and their feast!'
If they notice, we shall say: "Christians, and this is their feast,
And there is no harm in drinking wine at the feast.
And there is no harm in drinking wine during the festival."
وَإِنand if أَكبَرواthey deem grave الإِفطارَbreaking the fast أَوor شَنَّعواthey raise an outcry بِهِover it
أَعَدناwe shall make up لَهُمfor them يَوماًa day جَديداًnew عَلىupon الراسِthe head
And if they deem breaking the fast grave, or raise an outcry over it,
But if they deem breaking the fast a grave matter or vilify it,
we shall make up a fresh day for them—gladly, upon our heads.
We shall gladly make up a new day for them in its place.
