My cock has turned away from me.

And part of his story was that I

was at al-Khuld Palace, in a garden,

among the palms of al-Tann and al-Barni.

There the rose made room for one bearing narcissus,

    embracing myrtle upon a branch,

    linked with apples to apricots,

through which rivers ran with boats.

    The garden's meadow bore blossoms

    of varied splendor and beauty:

    yellow gazing toward red,

and white, in color, like cotton.

And a Barmakid beauty, dressed in a robe,

as though his beauty made him a jinni,

kept serving the drinking companions wine,

bright and clear, with the hue of oil.

Until, when dawn sang the darkness away,

and the wine swirled in my temple,

and the companion in merriment was poised

for whatever might reach him from me,

I said to my cock, when I saw him,

his two eyes weeping from sorrow:

You—if you fall short of what I see—

will spend the night with burning eyes, wronged.

Then he fell, drawing near him with bowed head,

and a flourishing light, toward the pledge [wording unclear],

    until sleep's messenger claimed him,

and he closed one eyelid upon the other.

I kept waiting patiently until, when

he leaned onto his side from weakness,

I crept sideways like a scorpion,

and sometimes crawled upon my belly,

aiming for him; then I burrowed into what

the trousers held, up to his back.

Such was my passion for him that I

missed the spear's passage as I thrust.

He felt the forceful thrust in his back,

and rose like one bewildered by my cowardice,

until he was on top of me, and I beneath him,

calling down curses upon sacred things,

    my forehead damp, after

I escaped him [unclear phrase: the ear's two fetters].

Then he hurled an apple at my face,

not missing my tooth when he threw it.

So I went away deprived, without satisfaction,

and my cock stood up, laughing at me,

saying—though all the fault was his—

So it goes for one who acts on supposition.
