Leave the dwellings to the one who weeps for them,

And banish the hangover with wine.

    And drink it—a deep-red wine

That turns the night into day.

Ten years old, she had never seen

Any fire but the fire of the sun.

She had remained in the depths of a wine-jar,

    Lined with pitch and tar.

Then, mixed with water, she formed

A ring above herself, and it circled,

    Like pearls joined to pearls,

    Small and large.

And when it is surveyed by the

    Eye, wherever it curves around,

You would take it, along the sides of the

    Cup, for tiny wāw letters.

From the hands of a charming cupbearer,

Clothed in beauty as his inner robe,

He goes round the company with a cup

That dresses the wine in a waist-wrap.

    And when they dilute it,

It gives the eye a flush of red.

And a singer who, whenever I wished,

    Would sing and gesture.

He raised his voice in a song

That stirred remembrance in the heart:

“Friend, have you seen at al-Khaytayn

    Any fire of Asma’s?”
