حَسبيenough for me جَوىًheartache إِنif ضاقَgrew difficult بيfor me أَمريmy situation
ذِكريmy remembrance لِرَحمٍof Rahm وَهيَwhile she لاnot تَدريknows
It is heartache enough for me, if my plight grows hard,
My tears are enough if my situation is dire
It is burning grief enough for me, when my plight grows severe, that I remember her while she remains unaware,
to remember Rahm while she is unaware.
My memory of a merciful one who knows not
And I dread disclosing the love I bear, lest her guardian's jealousy flare and his tyranny spread,
وَأَخافُand I fear أَنto أُبديreveal مَوَدَّتَهاaffection for her
فَيَغارُso grows jealous مَولاهاher master وَيَستَشريand becomes enraged
And I fear to reveal my affection for her,
And I fear revealing my affection
For then I would be the cause of our severing, and would have heaped, by my own striving, a burden on my back,
lest her master grow jealous and become enraged.
Lest her lover becomes jealous and suspicious
I am blamed for her love by a crowd who are empty of my anguish and untouched by my pain,
فَأَكونُso I would be قَدalready سَبَّبتُI caused فُرقَتَناour separation
وَحَطَطتُand I laid [the burden] مُجتَهِداًstriving hard عَلىon ظَهريmy back
Then I would have caused our separation,
Thus I would have caused our separation
They knew not the truth of passion, so they scolded; had they tasted it, my excuse would have been clear to them,
and, striving hard, laid the burden on my own back.
And undermined my efforts so diligently
For I truly detest the one who bears patiently with his beloved, whether in union or in desertion,
وَيَلومُنيand blames me فيfor حُبِّهاlove for her نَفَرٌsome men
خالونَfree مِنfrom شَجويmy grief وَمِنand from ضُرّيmy suffering
And some men blame me for loving her,
And a group would blame me for loving her
Patience is beautiful in its proper places, but what has the yearning lover to do with patience?
free of my grief and my suffering.
They know not my burning passion and my agony
لَمdid not يَعرِفواthey know حَقَّrightful claim الهَوىlove فَلَحواso they reproached [me]
لَوif جَرَّبوهُthey had experienced it تَبَيَّنواthey would have understood عُذريmy excuse
They did not know love's rightful claim, so they reproached me;
They know not the truth of love, so they succeeded
had they experienced it, they would have understood my excuse.
Had they experienced it, they'd see my excuse
إِنّيindeed I لَأَبغِضُcertainly hate كُلَّevery مُصطَبِرٍone who patiently refrains
عَنfrom إِلفِهِhis beloved فيin الوَصلِunion وَالهَجرِand estrangement
I truly hate anyone who holds himself patiently back
I do hate all those patient
from his beloved, in union and estrangement.
With their affection, in union or separation
الصَبرُpatience يَحسُنُis fitting فيin مَواضِعِهِits proper places
ماwhat لِلفَتىfor the young man المُشتاقِyearning وَالصَبرِand patience
Patience is fitting in its proper places;
Patience is seemly in its proper places
what has a yearning young man to do with patience?
Not for the longing lover - what's patience to him?
