إِنّيindeed I عَلِقتُfell in love with الأَحمَدَينِthe two Ahmads كِلَيهِماboth of them
كَيماso that يَكونُmay be هَوىlove الفُؤادِof the heart هَواهُماlove for them both
Indeed, I have fallen in love with both Ahmads,
I have fixated on the two Ahmads, both of them,
I have bound my heart to the two Ahmads, both of them, that my soul’s desire might be for them alone.
So that my heart's love may be for them both.
So that the passion of my heart becomes their passion.
Two companions clothed in every kind of blame, though their parents raised them in the lap of grace.
تِربانِtwo age-mates قَدindeed كُسِياwere both clothed in المَلامَةَblame كُلَّهاall of it
وَغَذاهُماand nourished them both فيin نِعمَةٍcomfort أَبَواهُماtheir two fathers
Two age-mates, clothed in all reproach,
Two fledglings who were clothed fully in blamelessness
Two moons—nay, two suns—amidst the clouds; they are my passion among all people; only them, only them.
And their two fathers nourished them in comfort.
And nurtured in bounty by their fathers.
It is they whom, if I were told "Make your wish," I would choose over all wide-eyed gazelles.
قَمَرانِtwo moons بَلrather شَمسانِtwo suns بَينَamid غَمامَةٍa cloud
فَهُماso they both هَوايَmy love مِنَamong الأَنامِhumankind هُماthey both هُماthey both
Two moons—rather, two suns amid a cloud;
Two moons, nay two suns amidst clouds,
So upon all the beautiful ones of creation, I bid peace until death—except for those two.
So they are my love among humankind—they, they.
They are my passion among all people, they are they.
وَهُماand they both اللَذانِthe two who إِذاwhen يُقالُit is said تَمَنَّmake a wish ليfor me
لَمdid not أَعدُI go beyond مِنamong حورِdark-eyed ones الظِباءِof the gazelles سِواهُماother than them both
And they are the two: when I am told, 'Make a wish for me,'
They are the two for whom, when it is said "wish for me",
I look no further than them among the dark-eyed gazelles.
I desire no gazelles of the wild but them.
فَعَلىso to المِلاحِthe fair ones مِنَamong البَرِيَّةِcreation كُلِّهِمall of them
مِنّيfrom me السَلامُfarewell إِلىuntil المَماتِdeath عَداهُماexcept them both
So to all the fair among creation,
So from me is greetings to all the nomads
From me, farewell until death—except those two.
Except for them two, until death comes to me.
