إِذاif غادَيتِنيyou visit me in the morning بِصَبوحِwith a morning draught of عَذلٍreproach
فَشوبيهِthen mix it بِتَسمِيَةِwith mention of the name of الحَبيبِthe beloved
If you greet me in the morning with a draught of reproach,
When you leave me at dawn with blame,
If you serve me a morning draught of blame,
then mix it with mention of the beloved’s name.
Rebuke me by mentioning the beloved.
Then mix the cup with the name of my beloved.
فَإِنّيfor I لاdo not أَعُدُّcount العَذلَthe reproach فيهِconcerning him
عَلَيكِagainst you إِذاif فَعَلتِyou do so مِنَamong الذُنوبِthe sins
For I do not count reproach concerning the beloved
For I do not consider blame from you
For I shall not count the reproach concerning her
among your sins, if you do so.
A sin, if you have done so from love.
Among your sins, if you perform this deed.

And as long as I live, I shall not see Jinān,
And if I live long, I will not see gardens,
And never, while I live, do I behold Jinan—
though she begrudges the share she keeps withheld.
If you are stingy with the imprisoned fate.
Though she be stingy with the withheld prize—

Veiled in a robe of beauty, she feeds
Content with the garment of beauty, she grazes
Veiled in the raiment of beauty, she grazes
effortlessly on the fruit of hearts.
Without pretense, the fruits of hearts.
Without affectation, upon the fruit of hearts.
