I said, when dawn grew bright

    then flared and shone,

    and the star's follower withdrew

toward the horizon and sank from sight,

and I saw that the rooster had crowed

    repeatedly at daybreak,

to Abu Bishr, my dear friend,

    wherever he turned and went:

    Here is wine, openly—

so drink it, not in secret,

not like one who speaks indirectly of a matter

    when he fears disgrace.

    And drink it tart—it carries

    cares away, this wine.

    It leaves a man, when

he tastes it, loosening his waistcloth,

    and seeing Friday as Saturday,

    and daytime as night.

And leave whoever finds fault with it

    and insists on shunning it

to drink water in place of

    wine, in abasement and humiliation.

And keep it away from Abu Ayyub,

    since he swaggered in pride.

    He sold wine for nabidh,

    thus making a losing bargain,

    like one trading a thoroughbred

that outran [the flood?] for a donkey.
