I raced with youthful passion, wild and unbridled,

And tales of shameful deeds mattered little to me.

And I found the sweetest loan of the nights

To be the union of melody with the eloquent string.

And many a songstress sang whenever I wished:

"When were the tents at Dhu Tuluh?"

Enjoy youth, which will not last,

And join the bonds of morning drinking to those of evening drinking.

And take a draught of gleaming, dark-red wine

That makes a miserly man's bounty flow.

    لَها حَظّانِ مِن لَونٍ وَريحِ

    His two scouts chose it for Kisra;

It has two merits: color and fragrance.

Did you not see me yield my honor to wine

And to biting the lips of the lovely gazelle?

For I know that it will widen—

The distance between my body and my soul.
