أُحِبُّI love الغُلامَthe lad إِذاwhen كَرَّهاhe repeats it
وَأَبصَرتُهُand I saw him أَشعَثاًdisheveled أَمرَهاwithout kohl
I love the lad when he repeats the charge,
I love the lad when he launches the charge,
And I saw him disheveled, his eyes without kohl.
And I see him disheveled and stern,
وَقَدand already حَذِرَwere wary of الناسُthe people سِكّينَهُhis knife
فَكُلُّهُمso all of them يَتَّقيguards against شَرَّهاits harm
And people have grown wary of his knife,
And the people have grown wary of his knife,
So all of them guard against its harm.
So that all of them guard against its harm,
وَإِنّيand indeed I رَأَيتُsaw سَراويلَهُhis trousers
لَهاthey have تَكَّةٌa drawstring أَشتَهيI long for جَرَّهاpulling it
And indeed I saw his trousers:
But I have looked upon his trousers,
They have a drawstring I long to pull.
With a drawstring that I crave to pull.
