I have sought refuge in your pardon—rather, in your generosity—no, rather,

in your grace, O Commander of the Faithful.

So let me not be denied a pardon

with which you have embraced all the worlds.

For I have not betrayed you in your absence,

nor have I entertained the thought of betraying you.

God created you to be Islam's strength,

and an impregnable fortress guarding its heartland.

Indeed, you have so terrified the idolaters

that you have left them without a murmur of defiance.

You visit them yourself every year,

as one who maintains ties visits those who sever them.

And had you wished, you could have contented yourself with ease,

and others would have endured the hardship in your stead.

So let the beauty of your face intercede for a captive

who worships the Most Merciful, making love for you his creed.

When humiliation descends upon a people's home,

then a neighbor of one like you must not be brought low.
