نَجوتُI escaped مِنَfrom اللِصِّthe thief المُغيرِwho raids بِسَيفِهِwith his sword
نَجوتُ مِنَ اللِصِّ المُغيرِ بِسَيفِهِ
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) رَماهُcast at him بِالتِجارِwith the merchants سَبيلُa road
إِذا ما رَماهُ بِالتِجارِ سَبيلُ
I escaped the thief who raids with his sword
I escaped the thief's fatal blade
I escaped the raiding thief with his sword,
Whenever a road casts merchants his way.
Who makes of men his living trade
When the road cast him upon the merchants,
وَسَلَّطتُand I gave power to خَمّاراًa wine-seller عَلَيَّover me بِخَمرِهِthrough his wine
وَسَلَّطتُ خَمّاراً عَلَيَّ بِخَمرِهِ
فَراحَso he went off بِأَثوابيwith my clothes وَرُحتُand I went off أَميلُI sway
فَراحَ بِأَثوابي وَرُحتُ أَميلُ
And I gave a wine-seller power over me through his wine;
Then drunkenness enslaved my soul
But I empowered a vintner over me with his wine,
So he went off with my clothes, and I went off reeling.
And took my clothes and self-control
So he departed with my robes, and I was left swaying.
