I am no lavish describer of a vanished dwelling,

nor one to linger long at its campsite.

Nor do I soothe my sorrows in the darkness of the

night with a camel-driver wandering aimlessly through the wastes.

But with my beloved’s face before me, I drink it,

among drinking companions and close friends:

    a clear wine, like carnelian,

as ancient as ʿĀd, with forebears of its own.

As though in the glance of its mixer’s eye,

when he beholds it, there were the gleam of swords.

It is as though, while the mixing water strikes it,

it were dark blood from the entrails at the bottom of a cup.

It smiles in the cup when you mix it

with raincloud water, revealing pearls from shells:

    some strung together, others unstrung,

some sinking within it, and some afloat.

So that is sweeter than standing at

a campsite of Asmāʾ whose traces have faded.
