Give me back the cup, for you two

do not know what good the cup can do.

You two have made me fear God, your Lord,

yet my hope in Him equals my fear of Him.

Do not reproach me over wine; you two

are unaware of the true nature of what it bestows.

Had you two experienced what I have, it would have been mixed

only with your tears of passion.

    Produce wine's equal in knowledge

of the subtleties of fellowship and affection.

Nothing matches its bliss when it enfolds you,

    save a mouth's embrace upon a cheek.

If you two do not drink with me

for fear of punishment, I shall drink it alone.
