أربعةٌ تعجب لحّاظَها

أربعةٌ تعجب لحّاظَها

كرّةُ مَن يبصرها خاسره

كرّةُ مَن يبصرها خاسره

Four astonish those who gaze upon them;

Four people are strange to behold

Four types of men amaze the watcher's sight,

Whoever beholds them returns at a loss.

Whoever sees them has lost

The gaze of him who looks returns in loss.

فواحدٌ دنياه ليست لهُ

فواحدٌ دنياه ليست لهُ

بلى لهُ من خلفهِ آخره

بلى لهُ من خلفهِ آخره

For one, his worldly life is not his;

One has no worldly possessions

For one, this present world is not his own,

Yet he has an afterlife behind him.

Yet has abundance in the hereafter

Yet his, in truth, is the Eternal Realm.

وآخرٌ دنياهُ منكوسةٌ

وآخرٌ دنياهُ منكوسةٌ

من خلفهِ آخرةٌ وافره

من خلفهِ آخرةٌ وافره

And another's worldly life is turned upside down;

Another's world is in ruin

Another finds his worldly life o'erturned,

Behind him lies an abundant afterlife.

With ample provisions in the afterlife

Yet after it, an Afterlife of wealth.

وآخرٌ فاز بكلتيهما

وآخرٌ فاز بكلتيهما

فالنفسُ غذ تبصره طائره

فالنفسُ غذ تبصره طائره

And another has won both;

Another has succeeded in both

And one has triumphed, winning both the worlds,

So the soul takes flight when it beholds him.

His soul flies free when it sees him

The soul, beholding him, takes wing and soars.

ورابعٌ من بينهم خائبٌ

ورابعٌ من بينهم خائبٌ

ليست له دنيا ولا آخره

ليست له دنيا ولا آخره

And a fourth among them is unsuccessful;

And the fourth among them is wretched

The fourth among them is the wretched failure,

He has neither worldly life nor afterlife.

With neither world nor hereafter

Possessing neither this world nor the Next.
