قَد سَلَّمَ الصَومُ عَلى الفِطرِ

قَد سَلَّمَ الصَومُ عَلى الفِطرِ

وَاِختَفَقَت أَلوِيَةُ السُكرِ

وَاِختَفَقَت أَلوِيَةُ السُكرِ

Fasting has indeed saluted the breaking of the fast,

Fasting has bid farewell to the feast

The Fast has handed the reins to the Feast,

And the banners of drunkenness have fluttered.

And the banners of sugar have collapsed

And the banners of intoxication are unfurled.

وَسَحَّبَ القَصفُ ذُيولَ الصِبا

وَسَحَّبَ القَصفُ ذُيولَ الصِبا

في عَسكَرِ العيدانِ وَالزَمرِ

في عَسكَرِ العيدانِ وَالزَمرِ

And revelry has trailed the skirts of youth

The new moon has retracted its tail

Revelry trails the sweeping robes of youth,

In the host of lutes and piping.

In the camp of Eid, festivity and cheer

Amidst an army of lutes and piping flutes.

وَاِستَمكَنَ الوَصلُ وَأَشياعُهُ

وَاِستَمكَنَ الوَصلُ وَأَشياعُهُ

مِن قَوَدِ الإِبعادِ وَالهَجرِ

مِن قَوَدِ الإِبعادِ وَالهَجرِ

And union and its partisans have gained the power

Reunion has taken hold with its followers

Union and its allies have seized control,

To exact retribution on separation and estrangement.

From the exile of separation and estrangement

Exacting vengeance on distance and neglect.

فَلَيسَ يُلفى غَيرَ مُستَبشِرٍ

فَلَيسَ يُلفى غَيرَ مُستَبشِرٍ

لِعِلَّةِ الصَومِ إِلى الشُكرِ

لِعِلَّةِ الصَومِ إِلى الشُكرِ

So none is found but rejoicing,

None can be found except one rejoicing

Now you will find none but the jubilant,

At fasting’s affliction, [turning] toward gratitude.

For the reason of fasting to gratitude

Turning the burden of the Fast into gratitude.
