Even if Arwa has forsaken you after union,

Yet clear wine has not forsaken you.

So take it unmixed, from the daughters of the vine,

Like a rooster's eye, mantled in redness.

A drink that, if you wed it to water,

Large pearls are born of the two.

Cooked by the sun, no pot has cooked it

With water—no, nor has fire scorched it.

In wines like it, for Khosrow

Anushirwan, the merchants used to trade.

When a hungover man drinks it thrice at dawn,

The hangover flies away from his joints.

And come now, sing me Nusayb's two verses,

For the cup being passed around has reached me.

And were it not that people would say, “Nusayb is smitten,”

I would say, “My life for the young girls,

My life for every girl whose waist is slender,

When she is wronged, she has no means of redress.”
