Come, you two, say to Hamdan:

    O libertine among beardless youths,

    and O Chinese duck,

and O iris of a garden!

I have indeed been told of the threat

you made against me, and it grieved me.

And in your eyes lies something more effective

    at killing me, O wrongdoer.

And what deluded you, O rogue,

    about me, except my submission,

and that I keep the pledge,

and care for you while you forget me?

So woe is me at the turning away

    of Hamdan the Khurasani!

And he whom I called 'master'

in turn called me a vile slave.

And he who had been more obedient to me

    than Solomon's birds—

as though fire were in my hem

and in my bosom and sleeves—

has now come to worship God

by forsaking me and disobeying me.
