كَأَنَّما وَجهُهُ وَالكَأسُ إِذ قَرُبَت

As though his face and the cup, when it drew near

To his mouth, were a full moon with a lamp hanging from it.

مُدَجَّجٌ بِسِلاحِ الحُبِّ يَحمِلُهُ

مُدَجَّجٌ بِسِلاحِ الحُبِّ يَحمِلُهُ

طَرفُ الجَمالِ بِسَيفِ الطَرفِ طَمّاحُ

طَرفُ الجَمالِ بِسَيفِ الطَرفِ طَمّاحُ

Fully armed with love's weapons, he is borne

Adorned with the raiments of love he carries

By beauty's steed, high-spirited with the sword of his gaze.

The elegance of beauty with the glances’ sword an archer swift

فَالسَيفُ مَضحَكُهُ وَالقَوسُ حاجِبُهُ

فَالسَيفُ مَضحَكُهُ وَالقَوسُ حاجِبُهُ

وَالسَهمُ عَيناهُ وَالأَهدابُ أَرماحُ

وَالسَهمُ عَيناهُ وَالأَهدابُ أَرماحُ

So the sword is his smiling mouth, and the bow his eyebrow;

Thus the sword his laughter and the bow his brow

For the sword is his smile, and the bow his brow,

And his eyes are the arrow, and his eyelashes spears.
