Are the ruined dwellings you greeted

deaf when you called out, or mute?

Their dwellers have been taken from them, so

there is neither jinn nor human within them,

save one resembling them in the whiteness of the

neck, the beauty of the eyes, and the duskiness of the lips.

And a companion I startled, when already dead was the

darkness, save for the last breath of dawn's gloom,

with wine unveiled to her suitor,

like a virgin's unveiling on the wedding night.

God has always had among His subjects

    a treasure from Rabiʿah al-Faras.

When this one's radiance fades as his term ends,

He kindles from that one a brightly burning flame.
