وَمُظهِرَةٍ لِخَلقِ اللَهِ نُسكاً

وَمُظهِرَةٍ لِخَلقِ اللَهِ نُسكاً

وَتَلقاني بِذَلٍّ وَاِبتِسامِ

وَتَلقاني بِذَلٍّ وَاِبتِسامِ

And a woman who parades piety before God’s creatures,

And a woman who displays piety before God's creatures,

and meets me with submissiveness and a smile.

And meets me with humility and a smile.

أَتَيتُ فُؤادَها أَشكو إِلَيهِ

أَتَيتُ فُؤادَها أَشكو إِلَيهِ

فَلَم أَخلُص إِلَيهِ مِنَ الزِحامِ

فَلَم أَخلُص إِلَيهِ مِنَ الزِحامِ

I came to her heart to pour out my complaint,

I came to her heart to complain to it,

but could not reach it through the crush.

But could not reach it because of the crowd.

فَيا مَن لَيسَ يَكفيها خَليلٌ

فَيا مَن لَيسَ يَكفيها خَليلٌ

وَلا أَلفا خَليلٍ كُلَّ عامِ

وَلا أَلفا خَليلٍ كُلَّ عامِ

O you whom one lover cannot satisfy,

So, O you for whom one lover is not enough,

nor two thousand lovers every year—

Nor two thousand lovers every year,

أَظُنُّكِ مِن بَقِيَّةِ قَومِ موسى

أَظُنُّكِ مِن بَقِيَّةِ قَومِ موسى

فَهُم لا يَصبِرونَ عَلى طَعامِ

فَهُم لا يَصبِرونَ عَلى طَعامِ

I think you are a remnant of Moses’ people,

I think you belong to the remnant of Moses' people,

for they cannot abide a single fare.

For they cannot be content with a single kind of food.
