Alas for my dog, lord of dogs!

He had spared me the need for an eagle (apparently intended; literally, 'wearied me').

And he had served me in place of the butcher,

And of buying the livestock dealer's stock.

O eye, shed tears freely for me over Hallab!

Who will take on the dun gazelles and the wolves,

    And every soaring, pouncing falcon,

Snatching up the dwellers on the hills,

Like lightning between the stars and the clouds?

    How many a slender-flanked gazelle,

Hard to catch, coming and going,

He fed me my fill of its roasted meat!

I went out, while the world was heading toward ruin,

With him—and he was my equipment and my fang.

    Yellow, streaked with saffron perfume,

As though he were anointed with liquid gold.

Then, while we were with him in the thickets,

Suddenly she emerged, her fangs bared,

    Speckled, bare of clothing,

As though she peered from behind a face-veil.

Then she seized his hock with a fang.

She respected no right of mine and showed no favor.

He fell, and she darted away without hesitation,

As though she puffed air from a leather bag.

May I never return if I return without retribution,

Until you taste the most painful torment.
