ياah رُبَّmany a خَرقٍwilderness نازِحٍfar-off حَديبِhilly
أَخضَلَهُdrenched it السَحابُthe clouds بِالصَبيبِwith pouring rain
Ah, many a far-off, hilly wilderness,
O Lord of a tearing, fleeing cloud
Oh, many a distant, sloping wasteland,
Drenched by the clouds with pouring rain,
Made green by drizzle and rain
Which the clouds have drenched with pouring rain,
غَزَوتُهُI forayed into it بُمُخطَفٍwith a lean hound وَثَوبِever-leaping
مُضَمَّرِslender الكَشحَينِthe two flanks كَاليَعسوبِlike a dragonfly
I forayed into it with a lean, bounding hound,
I raided it with a robe and cloak
I traversed with a lean-flanked, bounding steed,
Slender in both flanks, like a dragonfly,
With tucked-up sleeves like a jackal
Slender at the waist, like a worker bee,
مُصَدَّرٍbroad-chested مُلائِمِwell-set العُرقوبِthe hock
كَأَنَّماas though يَفغَرُhe opens his jaws عَنonto قَليبِa well
Broad-chested, with well-set hocks,
With a cinched waist and belt
Broad-chested, with firm, well-knit hocks,
As though his gaping jaws opened onto a well,
As if it gapes with my heart
As though, when gaping, he reveals a deep well,
أَوor عَنonto وَجارِthe den of ضَبُعٍa hyena أَوor ذيبِa wolf
يَعلوhe climbs الإِكامَthe hillocks فيon ذُرىthe crests of الكَثيبِthe sand dune
Or a hyena's den, or a wolf's.
Or the den of a hyena or a wolf
Or the dark lair of a hyena or a wolf,
He climbs the hillocks on the dune's crests,
It ascends into the heights of hills
He surmounts the hills upon the dune's peaks,
وَتارَةًand sometimes يَنحَطُّhe descends فيinto الغُيوبِhidden hollows
كَعَومِlike the sailing of سُفنِships البَحرِthe sea فيin الجَنوبِthe south wind
And sometimes descends into hidden hollows,
At times it descends into the depths
And at times he plunges into hidden lowlands,
Like seagoing ships gliding in the south wind.
Like ships floating in the south
Like the sailing of sea-ships amidst the southern wind,
رَأىhe saw ظِباءًgazelles ذُعُرَfearful القُلوبِhearts
نائِيَةٍfar away عَنfrom نَظَرِthe gaze of المَهيبِthe fearsome one
He saw gazelles with terrified hearts,
It saw gazelles, terror gripped hearts
He sighted gazelles, terror in their hearts,
Far from the fearsome one's gaze.
Far from the sight of the revered
Far removed from the gaze of the dreaded hunter,
فَاِعتاقُهاso he cut them off بِالشَدِّwith a sprint ذيpossessing اللَهيبِflame
كَأَنُّهُas though he فيin شِدَّةِthe force of الهُبوبِthe wind's blowing
So he cut them off with a fiery sprint,
So freeing them with blazing embers
Overtaking them with a charge of fiery heat,
As though, in the wind's fierce blowing,
As if in the intensity of the winds
As though, in the violence of his rush,
تَهويswoop down بِهِwith him خافِيَتاthe two inner wing-feathers of رَقوبِa bereaved eagle
مُعتَمِداًaiming straight لِتيسِهاfor their buck المَهيبُformidable
A bereaved eagle's twin wings bore him down.
Hidden hills collapsed
The wings of a watching eagle sweep him down,
Making straight for their formidable buck,
Leaning on its awe-inspiring leader
Intent upon their majestic, formidable buck,
فَصَكُّهُthen he struck him بِزَورِهِwith his chest الرَحيبِbroad
صَكّاًa blow هَوىhe fell مِنهُfrom it إِلىto شَعوبِShaʿub (Death)
He struck him with his broad chest,
So his blow with a wide blade
He struck him hard with his ample chest,
A blow that sent him plunging to Shaʿub—Death.
A blow that fell from it to the peoples
A collision that hurled him toward Death,
فَقَضقَضَthen he crushed العَجبَthe tailbone إِلىthrough to الظُنبوبِthe shinbone
وَانتَهَسَand he tore at الأَرفاغَthe groins بِالنُيوبِwith fangs
Then he crushed the bones from tailbone to shinbone,
It cracked wonder unto delusions
Shattering the frame from rump bone to shin,
And tore at the groins with his fangs.
And anklets jangled with bells
And tearing at the soft flesh with fangs,
يَهويhe hurls down بِهِhim صَكّاًwith blows عَلىonto الجُنوبِthe sides
كَثائِرٍlike an avenger أَمكَنَhas gained power مِنover مَطلوبِa pursued foe
He hurled him down, battering his sides,
He deals it a blow to the south
Sending him tumbling down upon his sides,
Like an avenger with his quarry at his mercy.
Like a rebel who attained what he sought
Like an avenger seizing his sought-after prey,

Ah, what a resourceful, successful hunter you are!
Oh what a cunning man of guile
Oh, what a master of cunning and gain!
Ah, what a resourceful, successful hunter you are!
Oh what a cunning man of guile
Oh, what a master of cunning and gain!
