Ah, how lovely the gathering that once brought us together

    at Tayzanabadh, in Ammar's garden!

And how lovely Umm Ammar, and the sight of her—

    a wine-selling woman who had become a wine-seller's mother.

She gives us draught after draught of wine that has been assailed by

time's vicissitudes, and an age following a whirlwind.

It moaned for a time as a sick man moans, and was not

healed; so the Creator, the Maker, shielded it.

And the long ages kept diminishing it,

until a tenth of it lay hidden in its wine-seasoned jar.

As though it had drunk draughts of itself,

so its color grew deeper within the pitch.

It never stepped a handspan from its secluded chamber toward anyone,

and always remained amid gardens and rivers.
