Ah, greet the dwellings at al-ʿAqīq

With the greeting of a lovesick, tender lover.

I stood there long, weeping for them,

But they pitied neither my weeping nor my sobs.

    Dwellings—my longing is ever stirred

For them by the gleaming flashes of lightning.

And fairer than my standing amid the dwelling-places

Is a yearning woman's waiting for a yearning youth.

And more delightful to behold amid a house's traces

Are lodgings high in an elegant palace.

And more enchanting than an exchange of whispered confidences

Is the slave-girls' beating time to tunes.

And more enticing than grappling with an opponent

Is a sweetheart's embrace of her lover.

And easier than meeting enemies at dawn

Is meeting the beloved at sunrise.

And a simpler course than mending a breach

Is a morning cup after the evening draught.

And a more poignant melody than a drum's sound

Is the treble lute-string's plaintive ring beside a singing string.

And more restful than pursuit on horses at a gallop

Is your pursuit of every swaying, charming beauty.

And sweeter than doing battle in war

Is doing battle with jars of pure wine.

So the beating of drums for merriment

Is dearer to me than a fluttering banner.

And the dark-eyed beauties' tossing of apples toward me

Is unlike the enemies' hurling by catapult.

And a pleasure gathering with merry music

Is sweeter than sitting by the road.

And the walk of a serving-girl hastening with a cup,

The sides of her neck richly anointed with saffron perfume,

Is sweeter than trading blows with long spears,

And than one army marching toward another.

So this is the counsel; there is no counsel besides it.

So hold fast with both hands to this sure counsel.
