    إِذا سَرَّهُ رَعفُ أَنفي أَلَم

    A bore appears before us at close quarters;

If my nosebleed delights him, he comes calling.

The sight of him brings a stab in my innards,

Like the stroke of lancets in someone being cupped.

It is as though my heart, whenever he appears,

Were skewered to my liver with an awl.

I say to him, when he comes: may he never come,

Nor may a foot carry him to us.

May I be rid of your image—not through blindness—

And the sound of your speech—not through deafness.

Hide yourself from my sight with whatever you wish,

Even with the cloak, veiling your face with it.
