A band of riders passed among themselves, upon camel saddles,
A group rode on saddled camels between them
A caravan that passed, atop their saddles, among themselves,
the cup of slumber, till drinker and cupbearer grew drunk.
Was a cup of wine so the one who pours and the pourer were delighted
The cup of slumber, till server and served were drunk.
كَأَنَّas though أَرؤُسَهُمtheir heads وَالنَومُand sleep واضِعُهاlaying them down

As though their heads, with sleep laying them
As if their heads and sleep placing them
As though their heads, which sleep had laid to rest
upon their shoulders, were not joined by necks.
On the shoulders did not reach the necks
Upon their shoulders, were joined by no necks at all.
خاضواthey waded through إِلَيكُمtoward you بِحارَseas of اللَيلِthe night آوِنَةًfor stretches of time
حَتّىuntil أَناخواthey made their camels kneel إِلَيكُمbeside you فَلَّa routed remnant أَشواقِlongings
They waded toward you through seas of night, time after time,
They sailed to you in the sea of the night for an instant
They waded toward you through the oceans of the night,
till they alighted beside you, a remnant routed by longing,
Until they anchored to you, so the passions fell
Until they made kneel the exhausted remnants of desire.

from each lean she-camel whose two girths shifted loosely,
From every lovelorn young woman yearning
On every lean mount with loose and shifting straps,
yearning herself, bearing a burden for one who yearned.
Yearning, she carried the load for the longing one
A yearning beast bearing a yearning burden.
