Shaʿfar ensnared you that day at al-Ramlatayn.

And the saffron-hued one may become the hunter.

O form made beautiful by the Fashioner!

Her neck and eye-sockets are a white gazelle's.

Until, when the appointed heirs mustered their troops,

And from the Prophet's raw gold the jewel arose,

And from the sons of al-ʿAbbās, a yellow bow-wood tree,

A noble branch and root nurture him.

Overpowering passion brought the people forward,

And a radiant day cried out in the night.

I am he who, were I called the finest poet,

The revealing rajaz would dispel the mist.

When months and months had passed me by,

I told my soul, which takes pride and so endures:

Do not let a departing caravan unsettle you,

Neither one heading for the uplands nor one for the lowlands.

    او يسمع الخليفة المطهرُ

    And disregard the reports, for they are the gathering-place [wording unclear];

    Until the purified caliph hears

From me—for I, at every dark nightfall ... [wording unclear].

    And in al-Anbār a rain pours down;

Rain is hoped for, and the dwellings grow verdant.

No sooner had the army come to it

Than a mosque and pulpit adorned it.

Not one seeing eye remained of Marwān's people,

Neither the absent nor those present.

Far gone! The lavish giver, slaughterer of camels, has perished.

And al-Anbār became a thriving abode,

While dwellings in al-Shām fell to ruin:

    Khimṣ, Bāb al-Tibn, and al-Muwaqqar.

And Tadmur was destroyed after holding out.

And Wāsiṭ—nothing remained but the bare plain

Of it, and the green monastery that stood revealed.

Where is Abū al-Ward, and where is al-Kawthar?

And where is Marwān, and where is al-Ashqar?

And where is the bewildered remnant that did not escape?

And where is your attacking host, massed together?

And ʿĀmir, and ʿĀmir, and Aʿṣur?
