O dwelling of Umm Malik, may you be safe,

Though far from where I dwell, may you flourish.

How shall I fare if you do not speak

Through signs—or how shall I fare with your murmuring?

My daughter says to me in stern reproach:

O father, one day you will leave me an orphan.

So I said: No! Know this, then know it well:

I am bound to the appointed hour of an unalterable decree.

Even were I in the gloom of a dark ravine,

Or in the sky, having climbed a ladder,

My allotted fate would pour down to where I crouched.

Indeed, by the Lord of the swaying, swift-trotting camels,

And by the Lord of Zamzam's basin and Zamzam itself,

I surely discern good upon my arrival,

And when I set out from my encampment,

To Ibn Abdallah, chieftain of chieftains.

For I trace the signs with knowledge.

I did not know what Muhajir's generosity was,

Until I clearly saw the judgments of oppression.

Muhajir, O you of overflowing bounty,

When sought out for bounty, you are the finest prize.

Your bounty is shared by all, your favors abundant.

And Tamim receives from you the choicest allotted share,

When their scattered bands gather together like thirst-crazed camels.

Al-Sham and every festival gathering know

That you are sweet to me like a sweet morsel chewed,

At times; at other times you are like the bitter ʿaltam plant.
