شاهدsurveyed مالاًan estate ربُّan owner of مالwealth فساسهand so tended it
شاهد مالاً ربُّ مال فساسه
سياسةthe stewardship of شهمa noble man حازمresolute وابنand son of حازمa resolute man
سياسة شهم حازم وابن حازم
A man of wealth surveyed an estate and tended it
With the stewardship of a noble, resolute man, himself a resolute man's son.
اقامhe stayed بهاin it العصرينday and night حيناًfor a time ولمand did not يكنbe
اقام بها العصرين حيناً ولم يكن
كمنlike one who ضنَّwas stingy عنtoward عمرانهاits cultivation بالدراهمwith dirhams
كمن ضنَّ عن عمرانها بالدراهم
For a time he stayed there, day and night, and was not
Like one who begrudged dirhams for its cultivation.
كأنas though نقيضthe creaking of الليفthe palm fiber عنfrom سعفاتهits palm fronds
كأن نقيض الليف عن سعفاته
نقيضthe creaking of رحالsaddles of المَيسhackberry wood فوقatop العياهمsturdy camels
نقيض رحال المَيس فوق العياهم
The creaking of palm fiber from its fronds seemed like
The creaking of hackberry-wood saddles atop sturdy camels.
واضحتand it became تغاليrising ever higher بالنباتwith vegetation كأنهاas though it were
واضحت تغالي بالنبات كأنها
علىupon متنthe back of شيخan old man منamong شيوخthe elders of الأعاجمthe non-Arabs
على متن شيخ من شيوخ الأعاجم
And it grew ever higher with vegetation, as though it were
Upon the back of an old man among the non-Arab elders.
وماand not الاصلthe rootstock ماso long as رويتyou water مضربthe bed of عرقهits root
وما الاصل ما رويت مضرب عرقه
منwith الماءwater عنregarding اصلاحthe tending of فرعa branch بنائمasleep
من الماء عن اصلاح فرع بنائم
And the rootstock, so long as you water its root-bed,
With water, does not slumber in its care for a branch.
