You know my desperate need, my Master, and my humble pleading,

And my tongue’s outpouring, O Answerer, in my prayer.

And human anguish is nothing but an innate disposition,

And among the hardest passions is the pull of innate nature.

Otherwise, the lifting of affliction is an assured promise,

You promised it, O Lord, to genuine distress.

My God, through what You inspired in me and opened for me,

By Your grace, my Lord, in my prayer and praise,

I saw beyond the opening another opening You had decreed,

Even if my soul misled me about my prayer being held back.

And the delay of whatever answer You deferred

Is providential governance for what is best for me.

And my very prayer, my Master, is mercy from You,

Which You bestow on me—nay, so is my very desperate need.

And every affliction, save Your justice, is a blessing,

Even if the souls of creation grow weary of it.

My God, I have not despaired of relief and fulfillment,

Even if the decree has multiplied the measure of my affliction.

My God, no barrier keeps my call from You,

And before I call, You veil my need.

My God, be gracious in answering, if I have

Erred in my prayer, my striving, and my longing.
