You have revealed Yourself in divine generosity, my Master,

by thanking me, O You who appreciate my goodness.

And what is my goodness that You thank me

for—and what is the measure of my might and strength?

And what is my goodness, when I have no ability

to make the slightest movement in doing anything, or to remain still?

When You will good for me, You create my ability,

and bring into being, my Lord, my choice and capacity.

And You make easy what You find pleasing from me, ordained

according to the ordering of decree and will.

And You reward me for the deed You approve,

and lavish thanks upon me, though it is not my doing.

Your thanks for his striving are honor enough for the servant,

even if he never attained the everlasting blessing.

    ولكنه جود بلا سببية

    Nor does striving arise of his own accord or at his own bidding;

rather, it is generosity without causation.

My God, Your gracious thanks are not in return for anything

that entitles me to win the Godhead’s gratitude.

But God’s thanking a servant leads him

to thank his Lord upon every blessing.

So grant me, through gratitude’s mystery, thankfulness by which You increase

goodness for me in my faith and in my worldly life.
